Standard rubber polymers like Natural Rubber (NR) or Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) are non-polar molecules. When they contact non-polar hydrocarbons (petroleum, mineral oils, vegetable greases), they absorb the oil. This causes volumetric swelling, loss of elasticity, peeling of the cover rubber, and eventually structural delamination from the internal fabric carcass.
How do NBR-based oil-resistant conveyor belts prevent this degradation?
Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) contains polar Acrylonitrile (ACN) molecules. These polar groups repel non-polar oils.
